Denver designer Mondo Guerra claims second victory, $20K on Project Runway

Seats are becoming increasingly hard to come by at Fabric Lab’s Project Runway Nights at Beauty Bar Denver. Mile-high fashion fans cannot seem to get enough of Mondo Guerra and his unique approach to design and life.

The challenge for episode 9 was to create a high-fashion look and a ready-to-wear companion piece to appear in a L'Oreal Paris “advertorial.” In addition to having his/her designs appear in the L’Oreal ad, the winner of this challenge received $20,000. The designers were given $300 for their high-fashion looks and $100 for their ready-to-wear pieces.

“I just tried to get a whole bunch of fabrics that I’m attracted to,” Mondo revealed in the episode, “I mean, who wants to play with a box of crayons with only one color?”

Mondo cited a kaleidoscope as the inspiration for his extravagant, multi-colored, striped-pattern high-fashion gown, but chose simplicity when constructing his color-blocked, ready-to-wear dress. Overall, the judges responded well to both of Mondo’s looks, with Michael Kors describing the back of his gown as a Kentucky Derby ribbon explosion.

Once again, Mondo’s innovation impressed the judges and earned him his second consecutive win in the competition.

“I came from Colorado with $14 in my bank account,” Mondo said in the episode, “Now, I have $20,014.”

When the judges’ decision was announced, the crowd at Beauty Bar Denver erupted into a cacophony of applause and cheers. Mondo was visibly moved when he addressed his supporters.

“I just want you all to remember that if you work hard and dream, amazing things can happen,” said Mondo.

Next week, Mondo will be hosting a silent auction event to benefit Colorado AIDS Project and Rainbow Alley. Special guest Michael Costello will also be making an appearance to show his support.

Items up for grab include original designs from Mondo and other season 8 Project Runway cast members, as well as signed items from judges Heidi Klum & Nina Garcia, signed copies of Tim Gunn's book Gunn's Golden Rules, and an HP Laptop just to name a few.

The first 50 fans who sign up will also have the chance to receive signed portraits from Mondo and Michael Costello and have their photos taken with the designers for a $15 donation.
