People love Tim Tebow and since he loves Jesus Christ, many of his fans have chosen to pay homage to Jesus as well.  Such is the case as a Denver Broncos fan who was photographed on August 15, 2011  wearing a customized “Jesus Jersey.”  The fan, described as a middle aged man, stands with his back to the camera displaying the orange jersey that has the name “Jesus” above the number 15.  The shirt has caused a bit of a controversy as some have called it sacrilegious and blasphemous.

Tim Tebow may be the most outspoken, radical Christian in sports today, and for that he has undoubtedly been targeted.  It may not just be Tebow’s faith that has stirred controversy with unbelievers but his bold declarations that his faith in Jesus has enhanced his career and has helped him succeed.  Many might be more comfortable if Tebow was a quiet, laid back Christian who just pointed to the sky after a victory, smiled and said something sweet and simple about his successe.   That isn’t who Tebow is and those who support him don’t want to see him change.  To say Tebow is a boon to the Christian community at large is an understatement.  From his mother’s testimony regarding advice to have an abortion, to Tebow’s success as a homeschool student who trailblazed his way from homeschool/public sports involvement to playing professional college football, to the unabashedly way he declares Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Christians love Tim Tebow and what he brings to the Christian platform.

With all of the negative comments that are made about Tebow, his faith and how some don’t seem to want to see Tebow succeed in the NFL, many appreciate the homage not only to Tebow, but to Jesus as well.  Some have asked if the vitriol against Tebow and his faith isn’t in fact stemming from unbelievers who hope that Tebow’s failures will prove that God isn’t working on his behalf.  After all, if God is blessing Tebow then that would indicate his faith is real and God is indeed moving.

The only trouble with that logic, however, is that Christians understand that walking with Jesus is an up and downhill journey.  Just because you’re on the mountain one day doesn’t mean you won’t be in the valley the next.  Christians understand that faith isn’t contingent upon experience, but rather that no matter where you are in life, you aren’t alone and Jesus is with you.

Expecting Tebow to fail as some sort of verification that his faith is in vein is useless.  Tebow is human, as all Christians are.  It’s the character of Tebow that points to Jesus Christ, not just his performance.
