DENTAL HEALTH: Time To Double-Check

How is your DENTAL HEALTH?

You might be surprised to know that your dental health is a clear indicator of one's overall health. In fact, according to WebMD, in the past 10 years we have come to find more evidence to support the direct link between oral health and overall body health. If you brush, floss, eat a balanced diet, and visit your dentist regularly - your teeth can very well stay healthy your entire life. Unfortunately, when asked, the majority of individuals will tell you they are "bad" about flossing their teeth.

Your Mouth: Gateway To Your Body...How So?

When not taken care of properly, teeth are prone to bacteria. Bacteria build up can result in infection. In this case, one's immune system kicks in to fight the infection. More than likely, gums become inflamed. (Additionally, inflammation can cause serious problems in the rest of the body).

"The theory is that inflammation in the mouth causes inflammation in the blood vessels," stated by Sally Cram, DDS, PC and consumer advisor for the American Dental Association. According to WebMd, inflamed blood vessels allow less blood to travel between the heart and the rest of the body. This undoubtedly raises one's blood pressure. Dr. Cram continues to explain that, "there’s a greater risk that fatty plaque will break off the wall of a blood vessel and travel to the heart or the brain, causing a heart attack or stroke." Even minor neglect of one's oral care can create all types of problems.

According to the MayoClinic, a root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes severely infected. With necessary treatment, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned thoroughly. After proper cleaning, the tooth then has a sealant placed over it to prevent complications in the future. If this type of oral health issue is ignored - and treatment is ignored - there is a good possibility that an abscess will form, causing all sorts of other (serious) problems. Needless to say, it is best to take action as soon as one notices any symptoms or signs of the need for a root canal. A few of these include swelling of the gums or face, unusual sensitivity of or around the tooth, and darkening or discoloration of the tooth. These are just a few of the signs.
