Dental care is important for exotics too!

While National Pet Dental Health Month tends to concentrate on dogs and cats, exotics pets need dental care too. Here in the Utica/Rome area of upstate NY, exotic patients can be seen at Burrstone Animal Hospital and at New Hartford Animal Hospital. Exotic pets include birds, reptiles, rabbits and pocket pets such as guinea pigs.

Maxiguard Oral Cleansing Gel is one product that is recommended for all pets- including exotics. Maxiguard has zinc ascorbate and taurine in it. The zinc levels are safe for all pets. This product will not remove tartar but does help prevent any tartar buildup and keep your pet's mouth healthy.

In birds, Maxiguard has been used to help with low grade sinus infections. In reptiles, stomatitis, or inflammation and infections of the mouth, may be treated in snakes and iguanas. Rabbits or small pets with dental malocclusions often develop inflammation or infections of the mouth as well. Maxiguard has been shown to help these pets too.

You won't be brushing your snake's teeth, but Maxiguard may help keep his mouth healthy and clean. Maxiguard is only sold via veterinarians, so if you feel your pet would benefit, ask your local veterinarian about ordering some for you to try.
