It's the latest comfort meal in the rebellion against health food. This one is for cheese-lovers. Denny's Fried Cheese Melt was introduced last month (Aug. 2010) to their "2, 4, 6, 8" menu. It includes wavy-cut fries and nearly essential marinara dipping sauce. The sandwich itself contains four fried mozzarella cheese sticks squished in the middle of a large grilled cheese on sourdough. A tasty meal, to be sure, but it may prove too heavy for some diners.
Grand Prairie, Texas, is home to two Denny's locations. The store at 408 Westchase Drive (I-20 & Carrier), is nicely remodeled with wood panels, new booths, and tasteful wall art. Service there is adequate, and the food is fast, hot, and greasy. When a mistake was made, they were very quick to correct it. One drawback you may notice is that, like rival restaurants, it smells like cigarettes. This location did merit an inspection score of "A" on an April, 2010, review from the City of Grand Prairie. If you would like to order a meal to-go, you can call the South Grand Prairie Denny's at 972-504-2110.
A Fried Cheese Melt will set you back only $4.00, but the hit on your diet is much more significant. The sandwich is 895 calories and 34 grams of fat. That's just about the same as a Big Mac. What's the big deal? Add the fries. 1,260 calories and 63 grams of fat. So, if you have dietary concerns, have a salad instead.
Denny's has created a delicious new sandwich, and as a result, generated significant buzz about their menu. Recently, the iconic eatery has gotten media attention by offering free Grand Slam breakfasts. And breakfast is still something this company does very well.
