Actor Dennis Hopper, 74, died Saturday morning after a long battle with prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his family in his Los Angeles home in the community of Venice, according to a statement made to the Associated Press.
Last September, Hopper's illness was made public after nearly a decade of privately battling the disease.
Hopper's long Hollywood career was benchmarked by his early "Easy Rider" film, which he starred in and directed. He recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame to honor his varied contributions in film and television. One of his most recent roles was on the TV series "Crash".
Hopper's five marriages included a recent divorce during the final stage of cancer, in January 2010. His ex-wife argued that she was being cut from his inheritence, while family members arranged his estate..
Funeral arrangements are unkown at this time. The New York Times is preparing a full obituary, according to the Associated Press.
