Accompanying the Gallery Underground in Crystal City are “Red, Blue, and Cyan Studios” where artists work, and this weekend is “Open Studios.” They are open other times too, but this is a special event.
Visiting the “Blue Studios” I saw two exceptionally talented artists who are located adjacent one another. Dennis Crayon is the “featured artist” this month by the Arlington Artists Alliance. Deborah Taylor is also a painter, but her style and approach is considerably different from Dennis.
It may be accidental happenstance that the two are side-by-side. Both are extremely dedicated to perfecting their work and style.
Dennis Crayon paints with incredible detail and may be described as tight work. Deborah Taylor paints more loosely in acrylic.
Dennis describes his work:
“I paint in a classical painting technique. Each of my paintings features an extreme attention to detail, especially with regards to the way light interacts with an object or surface. Painting provides me the opportunity to better understand the relationship of light with varying surfaces, and it helps convey my sense of wonder and intrigue. I recognize the value of craft in my painting and continually work to improve my technique and style.
In my most recent work, I juxtapose objects from my youth with contemporary objects to provide a unique vision or viewpoint.”
Deborah described her work:
“I consider myself a contemporary realist painter. My favorite studio is the great outdoors. I love painting plein air as well as still life set ups in my home studio or my studio at the Blue Studios at Studio Underground, The Shops at Crystal City, Arlington, VA.
My goal is to say what I want to say in a painting with as few strokes of the brush as possible. This encourages me to focus intently on a subject, looking at lights and darks, shadows and color temperatures.”
A dream curation might be to see an entire wall of a modern office building lobby arrayed with Deborah Taylor paintings as a band of color.
For Dennis Crayon, the dream would be to have a cozy room filled with his work, and fire in the fireplace.
