Denkai Animal Sanctuary in northern Colorado is launching a mission of mercy this week to care for 300 animals at a California sanctuary where the founder is retiring,
Floss Blackburn, founder of Denkai, received notice from a Los Angeles supporter about the retirement of the founder of Save a Life in Mojave, near Los Angeles.
Blackburn visited the organization and its founder recently. She found more than 300-plus cats and dogs plus a few goats who are in urgent need of medical care; Denkai's focus has become providing immediate care for these animals.
There are many cats right now at this facility that are walking around blindly because of severe eye infections that have gone untreated, according to a Denkai press release. Many will have to have eyes removed because of this issue and some may become totally blind.
Some have giardia, many need treatment for internal parasites and Blackburn said Denkai knows it will uncover much more as it begins to evaluate each animal on site.
Blackburn said in order to help these hundreds of animals, Denkai must raise a minimum of $20,000 for medical supplies and veterinary care.
The Denkai team deploys on Wednesday, Oct, 23 for its mission. How many animals it will be able to assist depends entirely on the funding Denkai can raise.
Once it has stabilized the animal population, bringing it to a manageable number for the facility and caretakers, Denkai will be aiding with a business plan, then moving the facility forward with a succession and re-building plan for the future.
Blackburn said today she wants to act cautiously so that Denkai doesn't move too fast, too far while trying to help. The situation is fluid and could change, she added.
According to press reports, Kern County, where the Mojave sanctuary is located, is struggling with a pet overpopulation problem and a high euthanasia rate. Blackburn said this leaves two options for animals there: The first is for Denkai to step in, provide medical care and find placement for the animals; the second would be the county stepping in to confiscate and destroy them.
