This year our very own Denitia Odigie was accepted to play at NXNE in Toronto, Ontario through Sonicbids. She will be playing on Saturday, June 20, so if you're going -- I suggest you get your tickets now. The festival will be held from June 17-21 and you can click here for ticket information.
Denitia Odigie plays acoustic music, but there is an involvement of electric guitars. She just recently released a compilation, a 5-song EP, of soul-folk songs that have a touch of country to them. She recorded in Music City with producer Darryl Swart and is already selling well at live shows in the south, from Tennessee all the way to Texas and even all the way up to Montreal, Quebec. She even recently signed a publishing deal with Weston Boys Entertainment and she's already back in the studio recording more soul-folk-pop songs.
Whatever the case, Odigie has found herself a beautiful formula for music, and if you can't recognize a little wonderfulness in it, then you don't like music." -The Deli Magazine
Denitia applied to NXNE through Sonicbids and NXNE looked at her material and selected her to play an official showcase. How great is that? Very lucky, if you ask me. But then again, she's been having great success selling that latest album.
She's definitely an amazing artist! Her vocals are very beautiful and the instrumentals go along well with her vocals. I really like her and I hope you do, too. Below is an interview I was able to do with her. The questions are just for you to get to know her better as a fan.
What influenced you to write and perform music?
The simple need to express myself outside of everyday conversation. And I have always been enamored with the magic of music.
How long have you been a singer/songwriter?
I've been singing my original songs in front of people for close to 13 years; excluding the time I wrote and performed my own tune on the keytar in the 3rd grade. 13ish years, not counting that. Maybe I should count that?
What equipment do you use for performing and writing?
I play an Ibanez acoustic guitar right now. Sometimes I play it through a Fender Blues Jr. Writing requires only pen and paper, but sometimes I record myself on an old 8-track Tascam.
Where is your favorite place to write?
Anywhere quiet. Even if just for a moment.
What is your favorite thing to do when you're not performing or writing?
Okay, believe or don't. I love taking long walks....Seriously!! Haha
Do you have anything to say to other aspiring singers/songwriters?
Follow your intuition, don't settle for anything that doesn't feel good to you. Write all the time, anytime, and for any or no reason at all. When someone asks you to sing them a song, do it. Your art is a gift for sharing. I have come to learn that.
Also, use your resources and be open to using new ones. The music industry is in a massive transition. I believe in artists staying true to their vision and direction. There are a lot of things we can do independently. Years ago, I created an electronic press kit on Sonicbids, and even now, my booking agent and I use that resource to keep an eye out for various opportunities.
