Dempsey led the Seattle Sounders FC to a thrilling 4-4 draw against rival Portland Timbers at Providence Park Saturday, scoring a hat trick that included the game-tying goal.
He scored his first goal in the 24th minute. Seattle midfielder Osvaldo Alonso headed the ball to Obafemi Martins who then sent a pass to an open Dempsey right outside of the box. Dempsey took one touch and sent a low shot to the bottom corner of the net.
With Sounders FC down 4-2 in the 85th minute, Lamar Neagle sent a cross into the box that Martins deflected toward Dempsey, who collected the ball and chipped it over Timbers goalkeeper Andrew Weber.
Less than two minutes later, Dempsey completed his hat trick and tied the game by converting a penalty kick after Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin was taken down by Portland midfielder Ben Zemanski inside the box.
