The Democrats showed they have fine form as the new Congress opened on Thursday. DCCC sent out the above "Tea Party membership cards" to the offices of 35 freshman Republicans.
The card has the tagline "Ideology over solutions."
It says the member is entitled to:
- Unlimited votes against women's rights
- Authority to create and/or ignore any national crisis
- Access to millions in undisclosed special interest cash
- Full participation in a caucus united behind ending the Medicare guarantee
- Ironically, government-funded health care paid for by taxpayers
- Multiple chances to protect tax breaks for Big Oil and outsourcing donors
Not to be outdone, the NRCC went further, posting on its website an article titled, “NRCC Welcomes House Dems To Congress with Official Lap Dog Kit” (title preceded with the hashtag “PelosiLapDog”).
The release reads, in part:
The National Republican Congressional Committee is welcoming Patrick Murphy to Washington with his very own official Nancy Pelosi Obedience School Lap Dog Kit. ...
“Patrick Murphy wasted no time showing his true colors by casting his first vote for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House – he’s now a Nancy Pelosi lap dog,” said NRCC Communications Director Andrea Bozek. “He is officially part of the club that has led Florida families and small businesses into the worst economic recovery in American history.”
The press release notes that similar letters were sent to other incoming Democratic members of Congress.
The release is accompanied by a brochure (which would seem to be a lot more work by the NRCC implying more taxpayer dollars spent for snark) with a cute dog on the cover. It is titled “Nancy Pelosi’s Obedience School: Official Lap Dog Kit” and reads, “Congratulations! Now that you’ve voted for Nancy Pelosi, you’re officially a Lap Dog! Here’s your kit to get started.”
The brochure lists four items in the kit, including a "Yes, Nancy" rubber stamp, because it “makes following her lead that much easier!” The cover art can be seen in the slideshow.
What's interesting is that the GOP attack focuses on one person. The Democratic snark focuses on -- issues.
Notably, the GOP continues to lie about the debt ceiling. The GOP continues to say President Barack Obama wants the ceiling raised so that he can spend anything he wants. Anyone who knows anything about the government knows that Congress spends. All the president does is sign or veto.
"The President proposes; Congress disposes," says progressive pundit Norman Goldman.
In addition, the debt ceiling does not allow additional spending. Instead, it allows the U.S. to pay its bills -- bills which have already been spent. It is analogous to spending money on your credit card, but refusing to pay your bill.
