On Wednesday, Democrats at the DNC convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, booed as God and Jerusalem was restored to the party platform, USA Today reported.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had to call for a voice vote three times before announcing that an amendment introduced by former Ohio governor Ted Strickland had passed.
The platform now includes 2008 language calling for Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel, and language that refers to God.
"We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values and interests of working people and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential," the platform now says.
The omission of Jerusalem "angered some Jewish organizations and drew criticism from Republicans that President Obama was distancing the United States from its closest ally in the Middle East," the Washington Post reported.
An article at Twitchy notes that for some, the voice vote sounded nearly even, but Villaraigosa declared the vote passed by a two-thirds majority. Video of the vote can be seen here. Convention goers erupted in loud boos at the announcement.
"How do you mess up God and Jerusalem politics in 2012? As well organized as the (convention) was MESSAGE wise yesterday, that was a BAD fumble," tweeted NBC's Chuck Todd.
"Dems in (convention) hall booing God and Jerusalem. Yeah, this is the party of middle America, all right," Human Event's John Hayward tweeted.
"An embarrassing amount of opposition in the Democrat Party for enshrining 'God' and 'Jerusalem' in the party platform," tweeted Romney spokesman Ryan Williams.
The platform initially left out any reference to God, while mentioning Obama by name over 100 times.
