Democratic state Sen. Laura Kelly to run for Congress

Senator Laura Kelly

Democratic state Sen. Laura Kelly confirmed Friday plans to campaign for the congressional seat now in the hands of Rep. Lynn Jenkins, a Topeka Republican who defeated incumbent Nancy Boyda in 2008.  Sen. Kelly is a Topekan who is in her second term serving northern Shawnee and Wabunsee counties in the Kansas Senate and plans to emphasize her willingness to work accross party lines.

The 2nd district includes much Eastern Kansas outside of Johnson and Wyandotte counties.  It includes Topeka, Manhattan, Pittsburg, Leavenworth and parts of Lawrence and should be a very competitive race.  Jenkins is in her first term and made a couple of very public gaffes in the last couple of months that are sure to be replayed over and over during the campaign.  And with Jenkins being a first-term Representative, expect the Democrats to pour a lot of cash into this election if they believe that they can take the seat back.
