Thousands descended on Washington DC’s closed National Mall to participate in an immigration reform rally and march. The flag bearing crowd carried Mexican and American flags as they demanded immigration reform. Eight Democrat lawmakers were arrested civil disobedience and charged with “crowding, obstructing, and incommoding” according to CBS News.
Democratic Reps. Raul Grijalva of Arizona, John Lewis of Georgia, Keith Ellison of Minnesota, Charlie Rangel of New York, Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, Al Green of Texas, Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, and Joe Crowley of New York participated, along with activists, staged a sit-in on the National Mall near the west side of the Capitol. In addition to the lawmakers, police arrested almost 200 people for “crowding and disrupting the streets around the Capitol” as reported by NBC news.
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke to the crowd saying, “I thank you for subscribing to the idea: Don’t agonize, organize,”…”let us act without further delay, let’s get a vote on the Floor…because the time for immigration reform is now.” She then yelled, “Si se puede” (Yes we can).
Independent Journal Review reported” “In a particularly brazen move on the part of the administration, the monuments at the National Mall continue to be closed off to American citizens, but they’ve approved a union rally for advocating amnesty for illegal aliens.”
