Demi Lovato has been estranged from her biological father, Patrick Lovato, since 2007 despite attempts from him at reconciliation. Sadly, Lovato's father passed away on June 22. Details are not readily available about his death. Mental health issues and cancer have been alluded to by numerous media outlets.

The 20-year-old songstress made an appearance on Good Morning America where she discussed her father's death. She spoke about him dealing with mental health issues and how his death has inspired her to want to help others.

“My father dealt with mental illnesses and he wasn't able to function in society and that happens to a lot of people,” said Lovato.

She told GMA that she is planning to set up the Lovato Treatment Scholarship, a program in conjunction with CAST Recovery, that will help cover the expenses of treatment for one person at a time struggling with mental health or addiction. Effective treatment can be costly. The scholarship will help pay for treatment, living in a transitional home and clinical services provided at CAST's outpatient program.

Lovato has stated that her father's death has been difficult but family and friends are helping her get through.
