On September 21, 2013, multiple gunmen opened fire at the upscale Westgate shopping mall leaving at least 68 people dead, and 175 people injured, as CNN reported.
As Demi tweeted on September 22, "My thoughts and prayers are with the beautiful and incredible people of Kenya right now.. ❤🙏."
Kenya has special significance for the "X Factor" judge. She had had traveled to Africa on July 14 with the Canadian-based charity, Free the Children, an organization that encourages young people around the world to promote change.
She also celebrated her 21st birthday in the country on August 20. One of the Maasai communities presented her a goat in honor of the occasion.
Demi's trip to Kenya was life-changing. As she tweeted, "Already itching to get back!!! Thank you so much @freethechildren for solidifying the importance of my recovery and changing my life."
Like Demi, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the Westgate mall shooting.
