Demi Lovato's shocking cocaine and bulimia confessions: I lied to everyone

Demi Lovato is doing well three years after going to rehab for drug abuse, bulimia, and anorexia, and revealed she used to smuggle cocaine on airplanes to feed her addiction.

“I couldn’t go 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes,” Lovato told Access Hollywood.

I would smuggle it and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom and I’d do it. I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me [and] I was able to hide it from them as well.”

Demi, 21, said she hid her drug and alcohol addiction by constantly lying to everyone around her.

“I’m very, very good at manipulating people and that was something that I did in my disease," she said. "There were times I would just continue to lie, so that everything looked OK on the outside."

Since the age of eight, Lovato has struggled with anorexia and bulimia, and at one point starved herself down to 88 pounds. She finally ended the vicious cycle of bingeing and purging after realizing she could kill herself from the disease.

I started compulsively overeating. I would bake cookies and then eat the whole pan. I went to just starving myself, and that turned into throwing up and starving myself. It was just this crazy battle going on inside me. I would throw up and it would just be blood. I realized if I don’t stop this, I am going to die.”

Demi said her rock-bottom moment came when she was sitting at an airport at nine o'clock in the morning with a bottle of Sprite filled with vodka. She threw up in the car that had been sent to take her to a sober living facility and realized she needed to clean up her act.

I had a moment where I was like, ‘Oh my God that is alcoholic behavior.' [It’s] no longer, 'I’m young and rebellious and out having fun. I gotta get my s*** together.'

Meanwhile, Lovato's mom Dianna revealed that she suffered from eating disorders and depression, and blamed herself for Demi's problems.

“I had a terrible eating disorder for many, many years," said Dianna De La Garza. "A lot of what [Demi] went through with an eating disorder had to do with what she had seen growing up. I also had severe depression."

Fortunately, the problems have brought Demi and her family closer together. Lovato, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, said she wants to be a role model for other young girls suffering from similar problems.

"[I want to be a] role model," she said. "I had a negative breakdown and it changed my life forever. If I hadn’t gone into treatment, I don't know if I'd be alive today."

Lovato revealed how she overcame addiction and eating disorders in her book Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year.
