Demi Lovato has been very open about being a recovering addict, but in interviews she has usually remained vague about what drugs she's addicted to and what were the depths of her addictions. But in a candid "Access Hollywood" interview that was conducted on Dec. 9, 2013, and televised on Dec. 10, 2013, Lovato told details about some of the low points of her addictions, including revealing that cocaine and alcohol were her drugs of choice, and she was still doing cocaine and drinking alcohol when she publicly pretended to be clean and sober.

Lovato (who is 21) said in the "Access Hollywood" interview: "I'm very, very good at manipulating people and that was something that I did in my disease, I would manipulate everyone around me. There were times I would just continue to lie, so that everything looked OK on the outside ...

"Something I've never talked about before, but with my drug use I could hide it to where I would sneak drugs. I couldn't go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes. I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I'd sneak to the bathroom and I'd do it. That's how difficult it got. And that was even with somebody [with me]. I had a sober companion, somebody who was watching me 24/7 and living with me, [and] I was able to hide it from them as well.

"I was going to the airport and I had a Sprite bottle just filled with vodka and it was just 9 in the morning and I was throwing up in the car. And this was just to get on a plane to go back to L.A. to the sober living house that I was staying at ... I had all the help in the world, but I didn't want it. When I hit that moment I was like, 'It's no longer fun when you're doing it alone.' I've really never talked about this stuff before ... I don't know if I should be sharing this.

"I think at 19 years old, I had a moment where I was like, 'Oh my God ... that is alcoholic behavior. [It's] no longer, I'm young and rebellious and out having fun.' It was, 'Wow, I'm one of those people ... I've got to get my sh*t together.'"

Lovato has been very open about her personal struggles with substance abuse, eating disorders, self-harming and bioplar disorder. She has spent time in rehab for these issues and has talked about her recovery in many interviews.

In December 2013, Lovato's ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas revealed in a New York magazine essay that he smoked marijuana for the first time a few years ago with Lovato and Miley Cyrus, and he said that they both encouraged him to smoke marijuana. Lovato later said in interviews that at first she wasn't happy about Jonas' revelation but that she has forgiven him because she has remained friends with him and his family.

Lovato and Jonas, who co-starred in Disney Channel's "Camp Rock" movies, briefly dated in 2010. She is now dating her on-again/off-again boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama. Jonas is dating graphic designer Blanda Eggenschwiler.

As previously reported, Lovato's first book, a self-help compilation called "Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year" (published by Feiwel & Friends), debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times' bestseller list for advice, how-to and miscellaneous books.

Singer/actress Lovato has been promoting "Staying Strong: 365 Days" with media interviews. On Nov. 18, 2013, she did an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America." She is guest co-hosting ABC's "The View" during the week of Nov. 18, 2013, and she mentioned the book on the show. And she was on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on Nov. 25, 2013.

She is also did a book signing of "Staying Strong: 365 Days" at Barnes & Noble at The Grove in Los Angeles on Nov. 23, 2013.

Although Lovato has become a best-selling author, her music career has faltered, since her two most recent singles ("Let It Go" from the "Frozen" soundtrack and "Neon Lights" from her "Demi" album) have flopped on the charts.

In 2012, Lovato became a judge on "The X Factor" U.S., whose viewers have been criticizing Lovato recently for her judging style, which they say is obnoxious and immature.

As previously reported, Lovato is also working on a memoir, which is also being published by Feiwel & Friends.

In other news about Lovato, she attended The Hollywood Reporter's 22nd Annual Women In Entertainment Breakfast at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Dec. 11, 2013. Other attendees at the event included former "X Factor" U.S. host Khloe Kardashian, her sister Kim Kardashian; and their mother Kris Jenner; journalist Maria Shriver; TV personality Cat Deeley; filmmaker Tyler Perry; actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson; and actresses Jane Fonda, Judy Greer, Alyson Hannigan, Gillian Jacobs, Molly Sims, Maria Bello, Judy Reyes and Nikki Reed.
