Demi Lovato is leaving "The X Factor" U.S., where she became a judge on the show in 2012. In a People.com article published on Dec. 18, 2013, an unnamed source close to Lovato gave this reason for Lovato's exit from the show: "She plans to spend next year completely focused on her music. She had a great run and a good time."
Based on comments all over the Internet, the majority of "X Factor" viewers are saying that they are glad that Lovato is leaving the show.
Lovato and the other "X Factor" U.S. judges in 2013 (Simon Cowell, Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio) have not officially announced if they are staying or leaving, but it's very convenient that a "source close to Lovato" has leaked this story to the media that Lovato is quitting "The X Factor," just two days after Cowell essentially told the media in a telephone conference call that he wants an all-new judging panel for "The X Factor" U.S. in 2014. It basically looks like Lovato is quitting before she can be fired.
Fox has not announced yet if "The X Factor" U.S will be renewed for a fourth season, but Cowell said in the conference-call interview that he is confident that the show will be renewed and that there will be other big changes to the show. He declined to reveal further details, except to hint that his role on the show will be different and that it's possible that "The X Factor" U.S.'s programming will be reduced from two nights a week to one night a week.
[Dec. 19, 2013 update: Lovato has confirmed that she is leaving "The X Factor" U.S., according to The Hollywood Reporter, which quotes her as saying: "I started the show being a singer and a musician, and so I'm going to go back to that. It's been really great, but I'm so excited for 2014. I'm going to dedicate it completely and entirely to music: touring and making a new album. Possibly releasing one." Lovato also mentioned what she'll miss most about her stint as an "X Factor" judge: "Being able to sit next to Kelly and Paulina and see them twice a week, and also helping mentor the contestants."]
It's not surprising that Lovato would want to leave "The X Factor" and quit before she could be fired, since she has been getting an avalanche of criticism from "X Factor" viewers, who say she is rude and immature, especially when it comes to her interactions with Cowell. Viewers say that Cowell can be very rude too, but he has a successful track record of discovering and mentoring hit artists, while Lovato does not.
And in Lovato's two seasons on the show, none of the contestants she mentored made it to the final three. In 2012, her highest-ranking contestant was the controversial CeCe Frey, who came in sixth place and still doesn't have a record deal. In 2013, Lovato's highest-ranking contestant was Rion Paige, who came in fifth place and probably won't get a record deal.
Lovato's music career has also faltered, since her three most recent singles ("Made in the USA," "Let It Go" and "Neon Lights") failed to make it into the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "The X Factor" U.S. clearly has not been helping her recent music sales. She also did a universally panned, off-key performance of "Neon Lights" on the show on Nov. 28, 2013.
However, Lovato will still have ties to "The X Factor" in 2014, since "X Factor" alumni Fifth Harmony, Little Mix and Cher Lloyd are the opening acts on Lovato's 2014 "Neon Lights" North American tour.
And "X Factor" U.K. 2013 winner Sam Bailey's first single is a cover version of Lovato's 2011 hit "Skyscaper." Although Lovato did not write the song, Bailey's version of "Skyscraper" is expected to be a No. 1 hit in the U.K. and remind people of Lovato's original version of the song.
As for viewers' reactions about Lovato leaving "The X Factor" U.S., most are saying some variation of "good riddance."
Here is a sampling of Internet comments about Lovato leaving "The X Factor" U.S.:
"Glad to hear it. Hated her oversexed teenager routine every time a cute guy came out. I think her vagina clouded her judgment."
"She should take Paulina with her."
"Losing Demi and her vast wealth of musical knowledge is like JLo losing another sequin during her second encore."
"It is Simon's show. His label owns all of the X Factor shows. He is the record executive on the panel. Demi is okay, but when she and Kelly have gotten in Simon's face, it just makes them look foolish."
"Arrogant, can be kind of immature, Simon. Starts a lot of the bickering between him and Demi. Calls people mean if they critique his acts. So yeah. He deserves some criticism."
"Personally, I think Simon tends to be really biased when he gets invested in an act, and I'm speaking his own acts. Example, telling them not to pay attention to critiques. Then again, he's kind of the opposite of Demi most of the time. Bad judge, good mentor."
"People are kind of being trolls...She is a talented young girl, not just some pop artist or former Disney star. Listen to her live, not one performance. She was a good judge, just didn't have the experience to be a mentor. And why people hate her so much, I don't know. She comes off as sweet, genuine, and funny in interviews and in other places. Sassy on x factor, sure, but genuine."
"She actually cant sing very well live. ive seen her perform a couple of times and both times the contestants were better singers than her. but her songs make up for it. dont get me wrong shes better han britney or jlo, but still..."
"I personally won't miss her. Seemed as though (particularly this season) she would take her 'conflicts' with Simon out on his contestants. And I honestly believe that she has such a small fan base (and/or a large one that dislikes her) that any singer with the misfortune of landing in the category she was given to coach/mentor was doomed from the beginning and was never going to win. THAT was particularly evident this season!"
"Demi is a beautiful girl, but doesn't seem to know how to enhance her natural beauty. Her makeup and hair choices aren't good. I'm not surprised at her leaving -- she and Simon have done nothing but bicker this season!"
"Glad shes gone I ever liked her little brat!!"
"Good riddance, DUMMI DUMBO!! She is without a doubt the most idiotic judge I have ever seen on any of the talent shows. Please, let the door hit you in the back when you leave. No one will care. You have been a disgrace to the X Factor!!!"
"Demi leaving X Factor ....Never will be the same.."
"Yeah... it will be better... she sucks!"
"Unprofessional judges, ignorant remarks from judges to other judges,De mi was pretty nasty, simon got all soft and votes his groups when they are terrible cause he is their mentor."
"Demi is amazing! paulina always says the same thing, is not bullying is being realistic, get over it, she doesn't belong there, and demi neither, she's an artist and has to be dedicated to music."
"Kelly and simon are the best. Demi needs to go..Paulina ..Usless !"
"WITH DEMI! She'll not be next season... sorry I'M NOT GO"
"No, get rid of demi & paulina! & alot of the ppl that left shouldnt have!"
"LOVED the season minus Demi. She is a rude & disrespectful person (I can't even call her 'woman'), and her critiques are irrelevant!"
"She sounded worse and so pitchy when she performed her song on X-factor then the competetors!!! she thinks she's it and some are better than her!!!!"
'"Demi has to go. You have to bring paula abdul back."
"Jeff Gutt was the only reason I kept watching. Otherwise it stunk. I'm glad Demi is leaving she was always rude to Jeff. Wish she was taking Paulina out the door with her!"
