Demeter Fragrances endeavors to make fragrance a more personal experience (Photos)

Demeter Fragrance Library recently held an event at the 57th & 3rd Duane Reade where invited guests could explore their new 2013 scents, as well as, learn more about the brand's philosophy and get a customized fragrance from Demeter's CEO Mark Crames. Perhaps best known for it's scents evoking common everyday objects or experiences, Demeter is now seeking to give more control to the consumers over what fragrances they wear.

A special mystique surrounds perfumes and fragrances. With their complex scents, elaborate packaging and vast variety available, people often find fragrance shopping to be a confusing and taxing experience. Demeter wants to change that. They want consumers to be able to wear the scents that they like, as opposed to what they are told to like. Demeter's CEO Mark Crames spoke of how they wanted to make fragrance more accessible to public and in a way, demystify the art of perfume. Most fragrances on the market today are made up of a variety of notes or accords, while the Demeter Fragrance Library has over 250 single note fragrances. Users can choose to wear the single note alone or layer several together to create their own personalized scent. Because fragrance is such a personal thing, Crames advises people to start with singular scents that they like, also things that are found together in nature often smell well layered together(ex: dirt, grass, & flowers). The amount of each note used and even the order they are layered can result in differing scents.

The event also introduced some of the new 2013 scents: Oud, Flowering Tonka, Vanilla Cookie Dough, Rice Paddy, Sunshine, Pruning Shears, White Sangria and Iced Berries. Demeter has the fragrances available in the traditional cologne form, massage & body oil, room diffuser oil, and roll-on perfume oil. On a side note, my fragrance experiments resulted in a seemingly odd but wonderfully fragrant blend of Oud, Jasmine, Sandalwood and Black Ginger. Begin your personalized perfume journey at one of their retail locations or online. Demeter products are available at Duane Reade, Ricky's NYC, ItSugar and http://www.demeterfragrance.com.
