"Mad Day Out" is a 110-page deluxe volume of rare Beatles photos from the summer of 1968, accompanied by a full length commentary by photographer Stephen Goldblatt to be published by Fotovision in November.
The book will debut in conjunction with an exhibition at the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism next month. Norman Maslov, co-author of "The Beatles' England," is helping put the book together. Many of the images have never been seen before.
The box set is comprised of a chocolate linen bound box lined with paisley satin. The book is white linen bound. Both book and prints are signed for authentication. Also included is a limited edition archival print, housed in a secret compartment, of the Beatles made by Goldblatt that has never been published previously. All books and prints are signed and numbered.
Price for the deluxe set is a $495 donation to the nonprofit Fotovision, which supports documentary photography. The book's website is http://maddayout.squarespace.com/.
A book release party and exhibition opening with Goldblatt will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 in room 105, North Gate Hall at the UC Berkeley School of Journalism in Berkeley, CA. Admission is free. A webpage with information is here: http://journalism.berkeley.edu/events/details/695/.

this is my dream but nearly a half-grand in this economy? Pisses me off
Yes but this is the first time I've seen a book of this type/price range
going for a donation to a non-profit . I myself can't afford it, but don't
feel so bad about being "shut out" knowing those who can will be
supporting a cause.
The Genesis Publications books have been in that price range.
Those on a buget will find Don McCullin's 144-page 'Mad Day' book, 'A Day in the Life of the Beatles' (due 19 October) a more than worthy alternative, with many unseen images from the twenty rolls of film he shot that day. Includes an introduction by Sir Paul. List price is only $24.95.
I was going to post this info but you beat me to it...
It would be great to have a book collecting the picts from ALL the photographers
involved in "Mad Day" but I'll definitely get McCullin's book.
and Kaleidoscope Eyes Sgt Pepper Photos by Grossman on Curvebender Books
going for abt 700.00...
I have ONE Genesis bokk (Derek Taylor's 50 Years Adrift) and would love to have some of
the others but I guess you can't have it all...
That price sucks.
It must be geting close to Christmas. Seemingly must have items come out in bunches.
I'm definitely going to get the McCullin book, but will have to pass as well on the $495 book. This is one of my all time favorite Beatles photo sessions. I have a small book, called (I believe) Summer of 1968 or Summer of 68 that is a collection of photos from that day. REALLY love the Mad Day photos so much.
Thanks for the post I saw this book a few years ago in the "Fest" catalog and didn't pick it up at the time.
Didn't remember the title. I just ordered it used The Beatles:The Summer of 1968 Peter Doggett.
Just a note. Yes this is expensive. $495. per book is a lot but the print run for this edition is only 100 copies. Nobody including the photographer, the designer or myself as a consultant is making or taking anything from the book sales. Only the printing and physical materials (discounted) are being paid for. All of the proceeds go to Fotovision a non profit organization promoting documentary photography. I know there are many who would never see a book as a fine art piece, but like the Geneses books who print about 2000 copies of each edition and several hundred of deluxe editions, there are collectors who simply appreciate the total art package and want them for their collections
I am in the photography business (as well as aBeatles collectors for over forty years) and know that limited edition single prints frequently start at the $500 to $750. selling price alone and go way up from there. I can buy a Jim Marshall photo for $3000. or an Avedon for $50,000. or more. I can also buy a book of their work for thirty bucks or limited edition signed editions for a thousand....
Maybe someday there will be a regular retail edition that is much cheaper. It's not in the plans now but you never know. I only know that printing up and packaging a hundred copies along with a print is worth this price for some. And I understand not for all.
I am proud you have been called to help produce this project (probably because I am both a Beatles and Photography person) . And yes I too would love to see a volumes of all the Mad Day Out images from all of the photographers..
Maybe some day.......
I appreciate the fine arts perspective on this (and similar) projects especially this one going to a related case . It just is frustrating that such a desirable item is produced only in this exclusive form.
As far as I know the only "Genesis Press" book that has received a standard press run is Harrison's
"I Me Mine" don't know if this decreased the collector's value of the originals ...
BTW I love your "The Beatles' England"
Got something to say?
