With so much doom and gloom economically the last few years, it's good to see a bright spot that includes thousands of Minnesotans. On Valentine's Day, Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines will distribute profit-sharing checks totaling $264 million to its 78,000 employees worldwide, including 6,000 that work at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. About 10,000 people are employed by Delta in Minnesota.
Delta reported net income of $854 million last year, 44 percent higher than the previous year in spite of much higher fuel costs. The payments amount to 4.85 percent of each employees' wages last year, or about $2,400 for an employee who grossed $50,000 in 2011.Other carriers have also distributed profit sharing checks to employees in the past year, including $12 million by US Airways and $265 million by United Continental Holdings, parent company for United Airlines and Continental Airlines.
On-time performance at MSP, Delta's second largest hub after Atlanta, improved by nearly 35 percent last year. The company has instituted numerous changes to improve its operational performance and these have had a major impact on the company's bottom-line results. With more than 450 daily flights departing the Twin Cities, Delta is by far the largest carrier at the airport. In addition to service throughout the U.S., the airline flies international non-stops to cities across Canada, to Mexico, Japan, London, Amsterdam and Paris.
