Delta to hire 1,000 flight attendants

Delta Airlines, the largest passenger carrier at both Detroit Metro and Flint Bishop International Airports, has announced it will need 1,000 additional flight attendants on duty by the middle of next year. This will include 425 currently on voluntary furlough with the balance being new hires.

Becoming a flight attendant involves certification on the aircraft for which you will be working. It is a long process which means the hiring process must begin now to have the attendants trained and ready to serve in mid-2011.

Competition for the positions will be difficult. Delta has over 85,000 applications on file, however many may be outdated due to a two-year moratorium on flight attendant hiring. Applicants that are bi-lingual will be a step ahead of others competing for the job due to the increase in Delta's international flights. Of particular interest, according to the airline, is Spanish, Dutch, and Mandarin.

Delta is currently the world's largest airline, a distinction it gained when Delta and Northwest merged earlier in the decade. It will be a short-lived honor as the merger of United and Continental will form an even bigger airline.

Currently Delta's flight attendants are non-union but organizing efforts are underway, initiated by the formerly unionized Northwest flight attendants that were picked up by Delta in the merger. The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA and Delta points out that furloughed flight attendants are eligible to vote, even while off-duty.
