Delta Air Lines, the largest carrier serving the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, reported December traffic figures that show higher load factors, and reduced traffic primarily as a result of decreased capacity.
All U.S. major airlines reduced flying this past fall and through 2012, focusing instead on profitability in the wake of dramatically increased fuel expenses. With the exception of American Airlines whose parent company AMR, Inc. last month filed for bankruptcy, airlines have been reporting healthy profits for 2012.
Delta's hub at MSP is its second largest after Atlanta, with close to 500 daily departures to more than 100 domestic cities, as well as international destinations in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Asia.
The Atlanta-based carrier reported a dometic load factor of 80.7 percent, an increase of 1.1 percent from a year earlier. International load factor was 81.2 percent, a half-point increase over the same month in 2011. Delta carried 12,563,985 passengers in December.
