Delta jet Dallas windshield crack: Delta jet makes emergency landing in NM

A Delta jet (not going to Dallas) suffered a windshield crack while 38,000 feet up in the air. The flight took off from Atlanta and was headed to Los Angeles when the windshield cracked -- it actually completely shattered on one side. According to CNN, the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The pilot told passengers that he needed to land the plane, sending many into a panic. The pilot then explained that the windshield "bubbled and then shattered" due to the pressure. The Boeing 767-300 aircraft was able to land safely despite the significant windshield damage.

The Delta jet did not experience any other problems on the flight. There wasn't a loss of cabin pressure and no one was injured. The plane was able to land in 15 minutes. It appears as though the windshield only cracked on the outside -- not the inside -- which is significant.

"All windows and windshields are at least double paned. This is a rare occurrence but the established procedure is to divert," explained Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant.

Passengers on board the flight were given the option of waiting for another plane (which Delta said was flying in from Los Angeles) or re-booking on another flight headed to L.A. with another airline.

Windshield's cracking mid-flight actually isn't as uncommon as you might think. This one, however, happened to make headline news.
