An expanded relationship between Delta Air Lines, the largest carrier at the Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport, and WestJet, a rapidly growing Canadian airline, is great news for travelers heading north of the border. The two carriers announced a codeshare deal earlier this week that will put the DL code on more than 15 WestJet flights. In return, WestJet passengers will find the codeshare added in five markets to the U.S., allowing easy, seamless southbound travel.
From MSP, Delta offers daily Canada non-stops to Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Toronto and Montreal. Delta's code will be added to select flights within Canada that originate in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Halifax in Nova Scotia and St. John, Newfoundland.
WestJet, which also has a strong relationship with Southwest Airlines, operates a fleet of Boeing 737s on domestic and international routes. It recently announced a plan to begin a regional carrier in Canada with 40 new generation turbo-prop aircraft, bringing improved and increased service to many smaller communities across the country.
With the new codeshare agreement, members of Delta's SkyMiles and WestJet's Frequent Guest Program will earn miles on flights operated by both airlines. Last year, an interline agreement made it possible for travelers to connect between the carriers on one ticket, as well as receive boarding passes at their initial check-in point. Checked baggage is also automatically transferred between Delta and WestJet.
