Even if it was a cardboard cut out version of Dell's new tablet that Steven Lalla, vice president and general manager of Dell's commercial client product group, was holding up, the promised specs had to get the attention of tablet wanters everywhere. Lalla and the cardboard display of the tablet were the stars of the recent Dell Means Business event in San Francisco on February 8th, 2011.
With a 10-inch screen, an Intel processor and running a full version of Windows 7, the business tablet is designed for those "who need greater mobility, as well as IT organizations that demand control, security, manageability, and integration with existing infrastructure investments." and is due out in the middle of this year.
This is a huge step for tablets becoming actual computers and not just over sized Iphones (yes, I'm talking to you iPad). A tablet with a full OS that could be loaded with productive software instead of highly regulated 'apps' moves the tablet format from media viewing device to fully function workstation.
As much as I am a fan of the Android Operating system and would love to get my hands on a Archos 101 or Adam tablet by Notion Ink., Dell's promise of a 10 inch Windows 7 tablet by mid year may be enough to hold off by tablet buying until then.
