It has taken me this long to write about the tragedy in Sandy Hook. Not because I did not care, but because I care so much. Having loss my oldest nephew to gun violence in September 2012 my first response to the news of someone slaughtering 20 children (and 6 adults) was pure fury.

I am a Christian, I love the Lord and I do believe in nonviolence as a means to secure social change, however…

Yes, there are some people who kill because they are crazy, but many kill because they are simply evil. Someone walked up to my nephew put a gun to his face and fired. Why? His killer did not like him. Jodi Arias brutally sliced her former lover like deli meat, shot him in the head and then shoved his body in a shower stall. Why? He dumped her for another woman. Adam Lanza tore apart the little bodies of children and adults with high- powered weapons in a mid-morning rampage. Why? He was mad at his mommy.

Mental illness is not an excuse for man’s inhumanity to man. It is a serious medical condition. To assign mental illness to every atrocity that people commit against one another is not only irresponsible, but it is simply not true. Some people are just evil. We can legislate gun control, but who can control the evil that is in a man or woman’s heart?

I am neither a psychologist, psychiatrist or a mental health professional, but I am a praying woman with discernment. There are people in this world whose hearts and minds are the devil's workshop. It is in the demonic chambers of their souls where evil is perfected and new ways of perpetrating evil is birthed.

Yes, there are people in this world who are crazy, nutty as a fruitcake, coo coo for Coco Puffs and just plain insane. But in the final analysis with no mental malady to diagnose there some people in this world who are just evil. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines evil as that which “..arises from actual or imputed bad character…”. Evil is not what you do; evil is who you are. And to that end, I pray, “Lord, deliver us from evil”.
