On the heels of the recent egg recall, comes another massive series of product recalls. The United States Department of Agriculture announced Monday that Zemco Industries recalled an estimated 380,000 pounds of deli meat. Although Zemco Industies is located in Buffalo, NY, the product recalls are nationwide.
The reason for the recall is that the deli meat may be contaminated with the bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause a potentially fatal disease. According to a statement release by Walmart Corp., "Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea."
"Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy," Walmart goes on to say.
Within that statement, Walmart also comments to its customers to clarify which deli meat is affected. The product recalls do not include individual packages of deli meat. They go on to say: "We encourage customers who recently purchased this item to return it for a full refund," the company statement said.
The product recalls were produced within the dates of June 18 to July 2, 2010. The "Use By" dates range from August 20 to September 10, 2010.The product recalls are as follows and are listed on the USDA website:

"Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches ANGUS ROAST BEEF Coated with Caramel Color" with the number 17805 1300.-- 25.5-pound cases
