The New York Deli that accused Forest Whitaker of shoplifting has apologized and fired the employee who frisked him. According to a Feb. 18 report by TMZ, Whitaker was humiliated by being subjected to this treatment in public. A spokesman for Milano Market in the Upper East Side maintained that the incident was not prompted by racism.
In an earlier report, TMZ explains what happened to Forest Whitaker that prompted his ire. This Academy Award winner was merely walking out of the store when the employee accused him of shoplifting and subjected him to a public pat-down which resulted in absolutely nothing being found. Forest Whitaker was within his rights to report the incident to authorities but did not due to the employee’s fear of losing his job, which he eventually did anyway.
TMZ was contacted by the management at Milano Market who expressed their intention to make things right with Forest Whitaker by making a donation to his favorite charity. Whitaker had only asked that they change the way they treat their customers. The deli said that they were retraining their employees to prevent the incident from happening again.
