Delaware snaps Dragons win streak

In an intense, sold-out atmosphere at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, the Delaware Blue Hens defeated the Drexel Dragons (13-5, 6-1 CAA), 65-56, on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons and Blue Hens were both undefeated in conference play coming into this and both were riding winning streaks of six and nine games, respectively.

The Blue Hens took a 30-28 lead late in the first half and the Dragons could never get the lead back despite cutting to as little as two with just over two minutes to play.

Senior guard Holie Mershon finished with 17 points, seven assists and six boards but no other Dragons finished in double-figures. Senior forward Nicki Jones had nine points, five boards and two blocks and freshman guard Rachel Pearson had nine points on the bench on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the arc.

Senior Taylor Wootton, who had a three-game streak of scoring 20-plus points, was held to only two points in a limited 24 minutes of action due to foul trouble.

With the score 54-52 with just over two minutes to play, junior Trumae Lucas hit a three-pointer for Delaware followed by an old-fashioned three-point play by star forward Elena Delle Donne that really solidifed the win for the Blue Hens.

Drexel will head back on the road to Norfolk, Virginia to battle the Old Dominion Monarchs on Thursday night.
