Delaware going green with numerous renewable energy projects

Wind farms, solar power, and other new technology to provide alternative energy sources have been making news quite a bit lately in Delaware. Perhaps green should be added to the state colors of blue and gold?

University of Delaware wins big with solar

The University of Delaware has won several grants in the the Obama administration’s latest awards of SunShot funding.

According to the UD website:

"The University of Delaware has won $9.1 million for solar energy research and development -- the highest funding awarded to a university.

Of the 24 states represented, Delaware received the third highest funding overall, after California and Colorado, with all of the First State’s solar grants coming to UD."

SunShot Initiative

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) SunShot Initiative is a collaborative national initiative to reduce the total costs of photovoltaic solar energy systems by about 75 percent so that they are cost competitive at large scale with other forms of energy without subsidies before the end of the decade.

Solar at Dover SUN Park

In another project, Delmarva Power has an agreements in place for purchasing solar renewable energy from White Oak Solar Energy from The Dover SUN Park.

The Dover SUN Park produces 10 megawatts (MW) of power at the 100 acre site using 34,000 SunPower E20 panels affixed to tracking mounts. The Dover SUN Park which went live in August of this year can produce enough power for 1,500 homes.

Not everyone sold on solar

While the news of renewable energy projects is exciting, some questions have been raised about the true costs versus benefits of some of the projects.

The city of Dover must disclose what its citizens are paying for power from Dover SUN Park according to a state Attorney General Office ruling. The attorney general's opinion came to light during a public comment session on the proposed Bloom Energy tariff on Tuesday night.
