Later this month the Del Sol String Quartet (violinists Kate Stenberg and Rick Shinzaki, violist Charlton Lee, and cellist Kathryn Bates) will perform the third and final concert in this season’s Soundings series. The featured work will be the fourteenth string quartet by the Australian composer (born in Tasmania) Peter Sculthorpe. This is one of four quartets (thus far) for which Sculthorpe has composed a didgeridoo obbligato part. This coming fall Del Sol will release their next CD, which will include all four of those quartets, the others being the twelfth, the sixteenth, and the eighteenth. The didgeridoo performer on these recordings, and at this month’s concert, will be Stephen Kent. The Sculthorpe performance will be followed by the world premiere of a short piece commissioned from emerging composer Nils Bultmann as a “response” to the “call” of Sculthorpe’s fourteenth quartet. At a post-concert reception, audience members will have an opportunity to meet both the performers and Bultmann.

This program will take place on Thursday, May 22, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The performance will take place at the Center for New Music (C4NM) at 55 Taylor Street, just north of the intersection with Market Street. General admission will be $20 with a $15 rate for students and C4NM members.
