On Wednesday night, November 9, 2011, the country music community gathered in Nashville for one of the year's most anticipated events, the 45th annual CMA Awards. Among the winners at the end of the evening were Lady Antebellum, who nabbed the Vocal Group of the Year award for the third year in a row.
In their acceptance speech, Dave Haywood said, "Wow, there is no way we can be singled out among this group." Apparently, Dave was not feeling the deja vu of the moment, but some keen awards show followers were. This year's win by Lady Antebellum is actually identical to last year's win in that the list of nominees for Vocal Group of the Year were exactly the same. So, for the second year, Lady Antebellum came out victorious over Rascal Flatts, Little Big Town, The Band Perry and the Zac Brown Band.
Granted, there are more individual artists in the country music genre than bands, but there are a few potential contenders as we look to the future. The Eli Young Band, who recently celebrated their first #1 song with Crazy Girl, definitely have the potential to make the list. Miranda Lambert's newly formed band, Pistol Annies may also be a group to watch. Their edginess and perfect harmony could catapult them into the spotlight as their music gains more airplay. Perhaps lesser known, but talented in their own rights are Carter's Chord and Eden's Edge. And if Glorianna can gain some momentum after this year's earlier upset of one band member leaving, they, too, have good harmony and the potential to rise to the nominee list someday.
For now, though, Lady Antebellum is enjoying being at the top of their game. The past year has added quite a bit of trophies to their collection. This latest CMA Award is just one more crowding the display shelf and confirming that their hard work, relatable songs and great vocals are worthy of recognition. Congratulations to Lady A on their third Vocal Group of the Year win and the continuation of a thrilling ride.
