Definition of Mass Flowers, Line Flowers & Filler Flowers in Floral Designs (Photos)

August 11, 2012

I have been introducing various stories about flower arrangements and floral events as well as flower related histories so far. Now I would like to get back to the fundamentals of floral decorations by focusing on the very fundamental principles of floral arranging.

Every flower belongs to one of the under-mentioned types, which is considered a common way in categorizing flowers used for arrangements:

1. Mass flowers: This is also known as a focal flower which usually attracts attention of viewers and takes a very important role in the arrangement. Namely they are always placed in the center of designs which area is the most visible location. Naturally big flowers with a round shape on a single stem are used for this design. Examples of flowers in this category are roses, tulips, daisies and sunflowers.

2. Line flowers: This is used for determining the height and width of arrangements. Therefore many tall flowers are used for line flowers. The overall shape of arrangement is usually defined by this flower. Due to this function, there are many designers who place this flower first in the container. Examples of flowers in this category are gladiolus, delphiniums and snapdragons.

3. Filler flowers: As this name implies, this flower is used for filling up the empty space in arrangements. This type of flowers usually grow in clusters on a single stem. As the main function is filling the remaining space in arrangements, they are often placed after mass line flowers and mass flowers are placed. Examples of this flower are feverfews, carnations, chrysanthemums and ferns.

If you are familiar with name of flower types as stated in the above, you may have less difficulties for understanding what floral artists are explaining on the internet sites and You Tube etc. Many floral designers explain how to make floral arrangements by using above mentioned terms. Especially for fundamental designs, above mentioned way of categorizations is pretty helpful.
