The Rockford IceHogs have loaned British defenseman David Phillips to the Toledo Walleye. Chicago Blackhawks General Manager of Minor League Affiliations Mark Bernard announced the move last night. Phillips is expected to be on hand tonight when the Walleye look to extend their phenomenal winning streak to nine games as they visit the Wheeling Nailers.
Phillips, who is the first British-born player to sign with the IceHogs, suited up for 21 games with Rockford this season, tallying a single assist and contributing 13 penalty minutes.
He previously played in the Elite Ice Hockey League with the Hull Stingrays and Belfast Giants in the United Kingdom. Perhaps his most notable season came in the 2008-2009 campaign with the Giants, notching 10 goals and 25 assists to help the team record their best season on record.
Phillips signed a one-year contract with the IceHogs back in July of 2009. At the time of the signing, Mark Bernard described the young defenseman as "a very good skater and has good mobility."
Following their quick road trip to Wheeling, the Walleye will return home to ring in the New Year with fans at the Lucas County Arena on Friday to host the Kalamazoo Wings. Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. game are available at the Lucas County Arena box office, by phone at (419) 725-WALL and online.
