The 10th Annual Deering Seafood Festival is one event you won’t want to miss. Bring the entire family for a full day of fun on the largest lawn on Biscayne Bay. This year, 2014, marks the tenth anniversary of this seafood-licious experience and they are doing it up in grand style.
Bring a blanket or your camping chairs and plan to veg out on the grass, overlooking the bay, as you feast on fish from around the world, and of course, Florida’s freshest fish and seafood, too. The main aisle of offerings is known as Seafood Alley, and here are some of the local restaurants and caterers that you can choose from:
- Golden Rule Seafood Market
- Whole Foods Market
- Devon Seafood + Steak
- Black Point Ocean Grill
- Marhaba Mediterranean Cuisine
- Iggy’s Street Wok
- Paella Party
- Fancy Loaf Antigua Association
Prepare for seafood overload as you try to choose between mouthwatering shrimp, icy cold oysters, fried conch, plates of paella, crab and more. Even landlubbers are in for a treat with chicken wings and burgers from everyone’s favorite, Sports Grill.
For The Kids
There will be an entire kids’ zone of adventure at “10 Leagues Under the Sea,” a huge, hands-on activity area put together by Deering Estate’s Educational and Interpretive Staff. There will be something for every age group including a fun activity that’s part scavenger hunt/part scientific exploration where kids will learn about various sea creatures and their habitats. Another favorite is the Lil’ Shrimp Kids Zone where the grounds are filled with huge inflatables (great for burning off energy with lots of jumping and bouncing). And yes, there will be plenty of kid-friendly food in case little Johnny doesn’t eat paella or stone crab.
Along with your appetite, bring your dancing shoes so you can thoroughly enjoy the continuous entertainment from musical guests like a steel drum band, a lively Junkanoo parade, the Bushwood Band and Caribbean Crew and you can rock out at the end of your day with Been There Done That.
In addition, you can take a pontoon boat ride to Chicken Key, shop and stroll down Artist Lane and take tours of the estate. Check out this video to get an idea of all the fun you can have at the Deering Seafood Festival.
Chefs in the House
One of the most popular things to do (besides eat) at the festival is to attend cooking demos under the big tent. There will be an all-star lineup from executive chefs around South Florida including:
- Jouvens Jean (Pierre’s at Morada Bay)
- Kareem Anguin (Oceanaire Seafood Room)
- Samir Canaan (Truluck’s Seafood Steak and Crab House)
- Damian Gilchrist (Ocean Reef Club)
- Chef Sean Bernal, always a crowd favorite
Gabriel Martinez will also be joining in, he is this year’s winner of the Johnson & Wales Student Seafood Competition. Congrats, Gabriel!
