Deerfield Island Park (Photos)

Deerfield Island Park is accessed by a free boat shuttle from the dock of Sullivan Park. It lasts about a couple of short minutes on the intracoastal; a pleasant ride on cushy seating. The park is a quiet 53.3 acres of grounds which includes two nature trails: the half-mile Coquina Trail, and the three-quarter mile Mangrove Trail. There is a tiny playground near the restrooms and picnic pavilion. Along the trail there are many almost hideaway like picnic spots with grills. On the Coquina Trail is a lovely observation seating area for viewing the intracoastal. You may easily encounter a green iguana or a gopher tortoise scurrying away.

Today the island, which was designated an Urban Wilderness Area in 1982 and a Gopher Tortoise Refuge in 1983, provides a habitat for raccoons, squirrels, armadillos, and gopher tortoises, as well as a variety of migratory and indigenous birds. - Broward Parks Web.

The free boat shuttle to the island runs only on weekends on the hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Sullivan Park and every quarter to the hour from the island, the last shuttle from the island returning to the dock of Sullivan Park departs at 3:45 p.m.

Initial street entrance seems tricky because there is no sign on the street for Sullivan Park, from Hillsboro Boulevard you will turn left on SE 15th Terrace if your driving east (otherwise turn right if heading west), when you enter into the street the area will say The Cove and then you will see signs for the park and dock which you will make a right then head straight towards the end, if there are a few parking lots just before the dock and a few spaces by the dock that usually fill up.
