As 2014 opens, Houston's cycling community are beginning to find opportunities to get in some seat time as the ride calendar begins to fill up. Whether you're training for the 2014 BP MS150 in April or are a dedicated year-round cyclist (or both), it's always gratifying to have an opportunity to share the road with like-minded folk. As January progresses, those opportunities become more numerous. For Saturday, January 18, 2014, that means the Texas Independence Bicycle Tour, an annual event arranged by the Deer Park Rotary Club.
Registered cyclists may choose from three courses - 30, 48 and 62 miles - all starting at the Deer Park High School football stadium, 710 West San Augustine St, Deer Park, 77536. Rollout begins at 7:30 a.m. The courses all wind through the byways of the Deer Park-Laporte-Clear Lake area, with the two longer routes reaching the LBJ Space Center. In addition to the endurance rides, there's also a 3-mile family fun ride starting at 9:00 a.m. at the same location
Registration: A PDF of the mail-in registration form can be found at the ride website or you can register online through Active.com. Registration pricing, per the registration form (but not the website) is $35 before Jan 3, 2014 and $40 if postmarked by Jan. 15th, 2014. $45 day of ride registration available. Family ride pricing is, again per the registration form, $20 for first parent, $35 for second parent, $35 day of ride - kids ride free. [note: verify all dates and prices with the contacts, as there is conflicting information on the website) Registered riders get an event tee and coupons/gimmes from local businesses.
Et cetera: It's a BP MS150 Recommended Training Ride™, so the usual conditions apply: rest stops and plentiful course marshals, SAG and mechanical support available, Snell or ANSI-approved helmet required, and no headphones or radios (as if anyone ever pays attention to that!)
If you're going, Deer Park High School is about 19 miles from downtown Houston. Exit from the southeast corner of Loop 610 to TX 225, exit to the right on Center Street. Turn right on San Augustine, find the Deer Park HS stadium on the left
