For one of the many book clubs I am part of we are reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin taking on a chapter a month. For October, the topic is focused on mindfulness and meditation. Did you know that there is a monastery dedicated to these practices right here in San Diego? Technically, it is in Escondido and based on different conversations I’ve had not many know there is this opportunity to practice mindfulness, take nature walks, and enjoy the beauty of the grounds at the monastery for free.
On Sundays (and Thursdays), the monastery is open to the public when people can join Deer Park Monastery practitioners for a meditation walk followed by a Dharma talk. There is no cost for participating although donations are welcome. Visitors who choose to do so may also take part in a silent meal and additional activities at the monastery. The grounds are beautiful and just walking around the property means gorgeous scenic views.
Visitors can also sign up for retreats and will want to check the event calendar for more information regarding visitation times and upcoming special activities.
Deer Park Monastery: 2499 Melru Ln., Escondido, CA
Note: When driving to the monastery, you will arrive in a residential area prior to entering the grounds for the monastery.
