Deep Purple studio album likely for 2012

Deep Purple fans may finally see a new album from the band in 2012.

According to an article posted today (1/29/12) at JamCanoe.ca, founding member Ian Paice says that the chances of the legendary UK hard rockers gathering to record an album this year are “almost positive.”

The veteran rock drummer says, “I believe that we have another good record in us and I believe we’ll make it this year.

The “Smoke on the Water” hitmakers, who kick off a 17-city cross-Canada tour in February, have not released a new studio album since 2005’s Rapture of the Deep.

The 63-year old musician blames the delay on band in-fighting, “A couple of years ago there were a couple of guys in the band who just didn’t see the point. And when it’s like that there’s no use trying to push it. But there’s been a change of heart.”

For fans that can’t wait that long, Deep Purple released a 12-track compilation of greatest hits, signature tunes and fan favorites earlier this month as part of Universal Music’s Icon series.

Track listing includes: “Smoke On The Water,” “Hush,” “Woman From Tokyo,” “Knocking At Your Back Door,” “Call Of The Wild,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Bad Attitude,” “Nobody”s Home,” and “Black Night.”

The Canadian leg of their “Smoke on the Nation” tour will kick off on Feb 2 (2/2/12) in St John's, NFLD at Mile One Centre, and wind up in Vancouver. BC on Feb. 26 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

Did you know? When keyboardist Jon Lord departed the band in 2002, Ian Paice became the only founding member of Deep Purple who never stopped performing with the group, and the only member to appear on every album the band has released.
