Jessica Harkness finally gets her new home. The Northwest Interfaith Build Group, family and friends devoted countless hours to construct a beautiful functional and green home. Even Jessica devoted many hours towards the construction of her home. After several months, the home was finally completed. The final product was amazingly gorgeous with siding and sod to top it off. On October12, 2013, The Northwest Build Group held the dedication at Jessica’s new property complete with a cook out and prayer. Family, friends and many other volunteers came out to finish the work and participate in the dedication. The volunteers were presented with plaques with a hammer over their names. Jessica was presented with a toolbox as the volunteers joked to not call them for repairs. Atlanta Habitat for Humanity has built more than 1,250 homes in the city of Atlanta and Fulton County, housing more than 4,700 family members. The homes are not given away or free. The organization provides qualifying families the opportunity to purchase affordable homes. Recipients must clock in almost 150 hours working on their own projects as well as volunteering on other projects in and around the City of Atlanta. Even though the work on Jessica’s home is finished, her work isn’t. Jessica must complete a series of courses. The courses include instruction in budgeting, how to care for her property and security. Jessica’s work continues with Habitat for Humanity. Jessica and her son, Jaden, are just getting started with a new life in their new home.
