National TV Turn Off Week in Dedham

Who would ever think that families of today would unplug their televisions and video games for one day, let alone for an entire week! Well, believe it or not, it will happen. Families across the nation, including in Dedham, will be turning their television sets off for a week during the National TV Turn Off Week running during April school vacation. This national event encourages family to turn the television off for the week and go out and get some exercise and socialize with friends, and in turn building the community atmosphere.

The Dedham School PTO’s, the Park & Rec department and the Dedham Library Innovation Team have talked with area businesses to provide events and discounts for the kids and their families. The way it works is that the kids can pick up a free TV Turn Off wristband (donated by ) at the kickoff party at the Dedham Community House, The Blue Bunny Store or at either branch of the Dedham Public Library.

My husband and I took our sons (now 5 and 2) to the kickoff party last year not really knowing what to expect from the event as it was our first year living in Dedham. My oldest son Dylan loved it and had a blast. During the week, we were only able to take part in a one of the events, namely the swim time at the Dedham Health and Athletic complex. My son still asks to go back to it every time we go to the grocery store beside it. This year, my sons are a little older and although one is still young, the oldest is very excited to take part in some of the activities. He is especially looking forward to the scavenger hunt at Paul Park, the Beyblade competition and the Rock Climbing. I am hoping to go swimming again.

Everyone is welcome to join in the activities. For more information about the events and to register please visit the Dedham Town Website at www.dedham-ma/gov/TVTO. Almost all of the activities require registration to attend and they fill up fast. Check this website often as more events are being added. If you have any questions or need any assistance, you can email

Some of the other events to look forward to include a boat rental, rock climbing, ice skating, swimming, dancing, crafts, teas, karate and a band!
