Decor 101: How to make a small Moroccan pouf

A small Moroccan pouf can double as seating or a side table

One of my most popular projects has continued to be the DIY Moroccan pouf. This step-by-step article shows you how to make a Moroccan pouf from an old party dress. The entire project costs nothing.

My original pouf was on the large size - about 22" wide by about 15" tall. This ended up being a little too big for my small apartment. So I followed my own instructions for the smaller pouf. The attached slide show provides some images of the smaller pouf that may give you an idea of what size is best for your living space.

The pattern for both the large and small pouf can be found here. Line A, the height of the pouf, is completely adjustable independent of the other dimensions. Line C, the width of the pouf, is slightly adjustable. The longer line allows for more of a "domed" top while the shorter line will result in a flatter top.

Another improvement was the use of a thin piece of foam to line the inside of the pouf. I picked up two pieces of 1/2 inch foam that was 10 inches wide and used this to firm up the sides of the pouf. The foam eliminates pouf "cellulite" and can be a useful step even for a store-bought pouf, which usually will arrive unstuffed. You are expected to stuff it yourself with paper, rags or foam pellets, any of which can be a bit lumpy.
