Declawing of Cats thought to be Severe and Potentially Harmful

Recently on CatChannel.com, the editors of Cat Fancy conducted a poll to determine whether its readers thought that it was okay to declaw a cat under certain circumstances. A website recently posted a story that promoted the declawing of cats. This story prompted the editors of Cat Fancy to conduct the poll.

Reasons for having a cat declawed vary. One possible reason for having a cat declawed is removal of a tumor. Other reasons include protection from scratches and prevention of destructive behavior such as clawing furniture.

Procedures for having a cat declawed are almost as varied as the reasons for having a cat declawed. One procedure for declawing a cat consists of cosmetic declawing. Cosmetic declawing involves the removal of the cat’s claws without removing the toe pads. Surgical declawing involves removal of the claws as well as a portion of bone from the cat’s toe with a surgical device that resembles a guillotine.

The American Veterinary Medical Association highly discourages declawing unless certain circumstances in certain cases absolutely necessitate the practice. The AVMA views the practice of declawing as severe and potentially harmful.
