Take a break from last minute shopping and treat yourself to a fabulous evening of jazz at the beautiful Walt Disney Concert Hall with the legendary Count Basie Band. Better still; treat those on your list to an early holiday gift of tickets to one of the hottest bands anywhere cooking up a jazzy Christmas celebration.

The Count may no longer be earthbound, but this phenomenal band, born in Kansas City, which in the 20s and 30s was alive with the heady mix of blues, and swing rhythms, is still going strong. Currently directed by renowned drummer Dennis Mackrel the orchestra’s signature smooth groove continues as one of the elite performing orchestras in jazz, winning 17 Grammy awards and 20 Jazz Times Polls, more than any other band in history.

Current members include musicians hired by Basie himself; John Williams on Baritone Sax, Dennis Mackrel, Vocalist Carmen Bradford, and Clarence Banks on trombone, these greats teaming with alumni from big name swing era bands, Lionel Hampton, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington keep the tradition of brilliant instrumentalists, and the trademark Basie sound swinging and dynamic.

Monday December 23, the Hall will ring out with the band’s cool and hot renditions of holiday favorites along with standards from the rich Basie songbook like “One O’Clock Jump, and “Lil’ Darling.
