Decide for yourself on this magazine-style Bible

What do Al Gore, Bono, and Muhammud Ali have in common?  They are all in the Bible.  Well, they are if you read Dag Söderberg's version, The Illuminated Bible.

Whether you are a Christian or not, it is universally known that the Bible can be tedious and laborious to read. Swedish publishing group, Illuminated World, embarked on a daring and controversial attempt to change that fact through The Bible Illuminated. While disguised as a glossy, high-end magazine depicting contemporary images and celebrities (of varying faiths), this unique biblical format takes the Bible off the bookshelf and onto the coffee table.

I

Illuminated World began with a vision to reacquaint the world to the Bible in a unique way that promotes conversation and is culturally significant “regardless of religious background.” Through an ancient text they hope to provide a platform that will unite everyone. By conjoining the typical representation of the Bible with a beautiful, modern, and approachable design, The Bible Illuminated aspires to display time-honored stories with photos that are tangible to modern problems and readers.

Despite its design to unite the world, for the vast audience of people who have been enticed to view The Bible Illuminated just as large is the crowd who have chastised its motive. The Christian’s response has been less than accepting.

Many Christians question if this version of the Gospel riddled with pictures accompanies the message of the Gospel or distracts from it. To add fuel to their fire, the publishers openly admit that they don’t support a specific faith, and that the co-founder and CEO of Illuminated World is not a Christian.

Those oppos

ed to The Bible Illuminated are troubled with the way the editors chose to highlight verses dealing with the “social gospel,” verses that send the message of helping the poor and feeding the hungry, yet chose to ignore issues such as abortion.

Are Angelina Jolie, Bono, and Bill Gates prophets abiding by God’s plan to convert the world? Or is The Bible Illuminated the design of an evil greater power to sway humble Christians away from the true Gospel?

Or could it just be that a publishing company released a book?

Fascinating article! As the author stated during an interview on "The Colbert Report" - this book will certainly "promote discussion" on the role of the Bible in contemporary society.
