If you're like me, you think of winter as a time to live under your blanket, in front of your space heater and impatiently wait for summer to roll around again. Perhaps in anticipation of hibernators like myself, Columbus' craft beer community is making sure we have plenty of reason to leave our houses and fill our bellies with a myriad of microbrews.
This Saturday, December 7th, World of Beer - Brewery District will be hosting a Founders and Bell's tap takeover. The event will last all day, but be sure to be there at 8:15 p.m. when a keg of Bell's Black Note will be tapped. Other Bell's notables that will be available include Double Cream Stout, Le Contrebassiste, Christmas Ale, Expedition, Two Hearted and more. For a complete list, click here.
Not to be overlooked by any means, Founders fans can enjoy Old Curmudgeon, 2012 Imperial Stout, Dirty Bastard, and as a special treat - Backwoods Bastards that will be available in bottles. However, this specialty beer will only be available to WOB Loyalty Members. Of course there will be more Founders beers to be enjoyed, but if you're looking to get in on some of the best ones, I suggest traveling down to the Brewery District early!
Bob's Bar will be pairing up with Columbus Brewing Company for a multitap takeover on Friday, December 13th at 7 p.m. CBC promises "'Cousin Eddie', casks, food trucks, and more!" so I think that this, along with the natural appeal of enjoying great beer at Bob's anyway, is enough to lure anyone in. Keep an eye out on Facebook for more details!
Hal & Al's will be continuing with their normal Tuesday tastings on December 17th. On this day, microbrew drinkers will be able to try out 12 different Christmas and winter beers, just in time to get you in the mood for the most wonderful time of the year (and if not, you'll at least have a nice beer buzz). Here's a nice list of all the beers that will be available. Hal & Al's, always generous, is also offering Columbus craft beer enthusiasts a pint of Actual Brewing Company's winter IPA. And of course there's the delicious food to enjoy and a souvenir pint glass to consider. Actually, don't consider this event - just go! It'll be a blast.
(614) Magazine's Craft Beer Tasting will take place on Wednesday, December 18th from 6-8 p.m. In heavy anticipation of New Belgium Brewing's arrival to Ohio, (614) Magazine is providing sames of three of New Belgium's newest craft beer creations. Tickets are only $5 a piece and are still on sale (at time of publication). This tasting will take place at The Red Brick Tap & Grill, which recently reopened its doors this past fall and promises a new experience for those familiar with the old version.
Sigh...are you tired yet? No rest for the weary! We must trudge on!
The Ladies Beer Club of Columbus will be slinging back beers on Thursday, December 19th at 6 p.m. The Pint House will again be the venue. So if you're a chick, you like craft beer, and you want to drink some quality beers with other chicks who like craft beer, this is the event for you!
And last, but certainly not least, is the Winter Solstice party at St. James Tavern on Friday, December 20th. Whet your whistle on this lineup so far - Founders Curmudgeon and Nitro Oatmeal Stout, Three Floyds Alpha Klaus, Thirsty Dog 12 Dogs of Xmas, Lagunitas Brown Shugga, Ayinger Celebrator and more. And if you need some grub to complement this great list of beers, Teodora's Kitchen will be on hand serving Panamanian comfort food.
Now, after reading about all these events, if there is ever a night where you're thinking, "There's nothing to do, nowhere to go..." you need to get your butt up, throw on a heavy jacket and go out and support the Columbus craft beer community in all its glory! Tis the season to drink beer and there will be plenty of it flowing in the next couple of weeks.
Have a happy December beer drinkers! And be safe!
