“Today, December 27, 3:30 - 6:30

The last Friday Sips of 2013!! We'll be tasting Barolo, Rhone and whatever else may be uncorked. If you're in town and/or have family and friends, do drop in!!!”

To say that co-op and negociant mass produced Côtes-du-Rhône has superiority to grower Côtes-du-Rhône producers like Beaurenard is akin to handing Dennis Rodman the Nobel Peace Prize. Many of you are familiar with the prowess of this Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Rasteau rock star, Domaine de Beaurenard also excels with their Côtes-du-Rhône level wines as well. Not sappy or overblown, Beaurenard's Côtes-du-Rhône is infinite beauty personified. 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah & 15% Cinsault, the Coulon brothers once again bring it with vintage 2011!! “
”Seductive, pure, soulful with almost a Burgundian-inspired underbelly, is offers brilliant raspberry tones which show after the wine is poured, then after 5-10 minutes in the glass impressive black licorice and lavender arrive. Graceful, mouth-filling, ethereal and upscale in the mouth with plenty of lacy, smooth characteristics on the pleasurable back end. Have this with chicken, slow-roasted lamb or grilled bratwurst.”

$44.99 BTL./$269.94 – SIX PACK CASE

“Undoubtedly this is one of the most outstanding price/quality rapport Barolo we work with year in and year out. Vietti's Castiglione Barolo is way, way more than just an entry-level offering. In fact, this could be broken down by vineyard and Luca Currado could legitimately produce numerous different single cru wines from this. As a tribute to the generations before him, Luca takes all of these small lots, ferments them separately and then blends them into one hell of a serious Barolo that is a ridiculous steal for its price level! “
"The 2009 Barolo Castiglione delivers a radiant but subdued quality with polished notes of dry mineral, black fruit, tar, licorice, leather and many more levels of complexity. This entry-level Barolo demonstrates that great results are achieved in 2009. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. If forced to inhabit a desert island that only served the wines of a single producer, I would want Luca Currado to be that supplier. He excels at everything he does from his castle perch at the heart of Castiglione Falletto. Serving as Vietti winemaker since the early 90s, his wines remain extraordinary. In fact, they are among the best I tasted from the 2009 vintage. – 94 POINTS – THE WINE ADVOCATE"

Best Red Wines of 2013

I have to say it was rather hard to get up for work this morning. It wasn’t the seemingly several pounds of brisket I ingested yesterday still having their way with my digestive tract. It just seemed that I should still be on vacation. My mind had to do a reset from 2 days of midweek indulgence. But at least I can come back to what may be becoming my favorite tasting of the year, when we (and by “we” I mean “I”) look back over the last 52 weeks of wine tasting and choose, from an endless list of candidates, the eight wines that seemed to grab your attention the most this year. Many were sold out, but luckily enough are still lurking about my wholesalers warehouses that tomorrow we’ll be putting on quite the delicious show. I’m staggered as always by the sheer number of bottles we go through on Fridays over the course of a year, in 2013 somewhere north of 2000 (!!) bottles opened. So why not add a few dozen more to the total, especially when it is the best of the best…..
Date tasted is in parentheses
-2010 CHATEAU ROC DE SEGUR Bordeaux, France (March 21) $9.95
-2007 SELLA & MOSCA Carignano Riserva, Italy (January 31) $14.95
-2004 BODEGAS ONTANON Rioja Riserva, Spain (October 3) $19.95
-2012 WALTER SCOTT WINES Pinot Noir “La Combe Verte”, Ore. (Sept.19) $22.95
-2011 SOBON ESTATE Zinfandel “Fiddletown”, Cali. (November 7) $20.95
Choosing the Best of the Bonus pours was especially daunting, but incredibly fun….
-2010 MCKINLAY SPRINGS Cabernet Sauvignon “Horse Heaven Hills”, Wash. (August 8) $23.95
-2004 UGO LEQUIO Barbaresco “Gallina”, Italy (May 2) $29.95
-2010 PAUL AUTARD Chateauneuf du Pape, France (January 24) $41.95

It was, once again at the wine shack, a very good year! To prove that living in the past isn’t such a bad thing after all make plans to stop by with your friends and family anytime tomorrow from 4:30-8:00. The cost for our fist five remains resolutely at $10, with a nominal charge for bonus fun. If you have leftovers, bring ‘em. See you here for the last Friday Tasting for the next 3 weeks!!
