December is half over and so far this this has been cold and snowy month. The average temperature for the first half of the month, which includes both the highs and lows, is 26.57° which is 4.83° below average. The typical high temperatures for early December are in the mid-30s. The average high for this month so far is 32.27° which is 4.75° below average. The average early December low temperatures are in the mid-20s. The average low temperature for this month is 20.87° which is 4.90° below average.
Grand Rapids precipitation, which includes both rain and melted snow, is close to the average. So far the airport observed 1.39 inches which is 0.10 inches above average. Snowfall on the other hand is abundant for the city. The first week of December was rather quiet but the snowfall accumulated rapidly during the second week. So far this month Grand Rapids has seen more than twice the average snowfall. We’ve had a whopping 19.1 inches which is 9.7 inches above average. Remember this is the observation taken at the airport in Grand Rapids. There were several significant snowfall events. One came during a four day stretch from 9-12 Dec. Right after that another burst of snow impacted West Michigan from 13-14 Dec.
The cold and snow will likely linger into Christmas as the 6-10 day outlook issued by the Climate Prediction Center indicates.
